The role of land use planning in building resilient cities Rapid and uncontrolled urbanization is increasing the exposure of populations and infrastructure to potential hazards. There is a need to better plan growth in terms of infrastructure and construction by taking into account hazard and risk parameters that can protect these investments from major damages. There is also a need to improve the delivery of core services such as health, education, social welfare, transportation, power, water, sanitation, and others so that these services will continue to function even after major catastrophic events such as earthquakes. The impact of natural and man-made hazards can be reduced through adequate planning and incorporating specific DRR measures in land use planning and urban development processes, thus minimizing the human, economic and environmental damage. By increasing the resilience of communities, DRR also improves the ability of people and infrastructure to recover from disasters.
