- Title
- Integrating Hazard and Exposure for East New Britain, Papua New Guinea
- Abstract
- In 2010, the Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG) and Geoscience Australia (GA) entered into a partnership aimed at strengthening the capacity of government agencies in Papua New Guinea (PNG) to undertake natural hazard risk assessments, either single hazard or multi-hazard. This activity, “Strengthening Natural Hazard Risk Assessment Capacity in Papua New Guinea” was supported by AusAID and developed in collaboration with GoPNG technical agencies. Specifically, this partnership was designed to strengthen the technical capacity of Papua New Guinea agencies to develop natural hazard and exposure information and to integrate these for a pilot province in Papua New Guinea. East New Britain Province was selected as the pilot province prior to commencement of the Activity. The Activity was structured into two main parts: x An assessment of the current capacity of government agencies in Papua New Guinea to undertake natural hazard risk assessments including an evaluation of baseline agency technical capacity, skills, and a stocktake of existing baseline data and information for a pilot province (East New Britain; Activity Baseline Study - Jones and Bear-Crozier, 2011). x Development and integration of natural hazard and exposure information for earthquake, tsunami and volcanic ash for the pilot province of East New Britain.
