Abstract
"This is the final report of the findings from the field mission carried out during the week of 5-12 September 2007 in the areas affected by the 15 August 2007 Magnitude 7.9 Earthquake near the Coast of Central Peru. The mission was carried out by a team of three engineers: Fabio Taucer (Team Leader – Joint Research Centre, European Commission, Ispra - Italy), John Alarcón (Arup, UK) and Emily So (University of Cambridge, UK), all members of the Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT – The Institution of Structural Engineers, London). The main objectives of the mission were to collect data and make observations leading to improvements in assessment and design methods and techniques for strengthening and retrofit, to gather data on socio-economic aspects and management of the disaster, as well as to assist the phase of reconstruction. The mission focused on the behaviour of non-engineered structures, in particular those of adobe construction, which caused 519 deaths and 1,366 injuries following the collapse of more than 58,000 houses."
