- Disaster Risk Profile of the Republic of Seychelles
- Abstract
- The Department of Risk and Disaster Management (DRDM) of Seychelles was created in October 2004 as the National Disaster Secretariat for the NDC. Two months later the tsunami impacted Seychelles. The then National Disaster Secretariat was upgraded as the Department of Risk and Disaster Management in December 2006. The Department, then, started to be headed by a Principal Secretary, assisted by a Director General and now a director for impact assessment. The Disaster Risk Profile is the main deliverable of the Risk assessment study. This document aims at: - Supporting the DRDM in the establishment of an early warning and disaster management system; - Identifying and describing major past disasters that stroke the country and need to be addressed; - Creating a profile of natural disasters impact on Seychelles; - Producing scenarios and trends concerning hazard and vulnerability projections with regards to climate change impact; - Providing tools and guidelines to DRDM to monitor and prevent disasters, reduce the vulnerability of elements at risk.
