- Risk mapping of Alazani river section (Pankisis Gorge) Georgia
- Abstract
- Among the most dangerous natural disasters (12) in Georgia, floods have the leading role and are followed by huge material damage and losses. Regarding this issue, based on the request of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, UN Development Program conducted a research at fall 2009 and determined the necessity of development of early warning system in the country. The main recommendation of this research is to support risk assessment methodology. The objective of the project is to assess flash flow risk of the ravines near Pankisi gorge villages and develop adequate preventive measures. The overall objective of the risk assessment is to identify population and elements at risk in the affected area infrastructure (including schools, kindergartens, hospitals, arable land, etc.). The specific objective is to verify and prioritize the project sites, which UNDP identified in collaboration with Akhmeta district Gamgebeli.
